Numerical Tracking of Natural Gas Migration in Underground Gas Storage with Multilayered Sandstone and Fault-Bearing Caprocks

The structure of caprocks is often greatly altered by different scales faults or fissures in long-term geological tectonic evolution, and the sealing performance may be deteriorated. In this paper, a simplified model characterized as multilayered sandstone fault-bearing extracted from Shuang 6 underground gas storage located Liaohe oilfield was established. Different fault geometry (e.g., length, dip angle, type) seepage attributes (porosity permeability) were considered to illustrate their impacts on natural migration during cyclic high rate injection production gas. results showed that anisotropy front are strongly affected formation properties and, especially, hindered low permeability layers. difference lateral distance layers can reach 110 m at end period, with an annual volume 108 m3. along zone mainly controlled faults, followed scale, type. failure does not occur based simulated distribution, showing very limited amount migrates into caprocks.
